“For so many
years, I rejected where I grew up, chasing someone I wasn’t. Now, I am learning
to be at home in my own skin and to embrace all the parts of me - the boots and
the bling”.
Holly has loved
music since she was just a little girl growing up in the small town of Wana,
West Virginia. She found her voice as a little girl, accompanying her father on
Sunday mornings in church choir. As she grew up she began to take her musical
talents outside of the church walls, performing in multiple school choirs,
musicals, festivals and fairs. To continue feeding the fire Holly’s mother saw
in her daughter, she purchased her daughter a piano and scheduled lessons with
a local instructor.
After graduating
from high school, Holly moved to Cincinnati, began touring with Blessid Union,
and opening for bands like The Spin Doctors, Gin Blossoms, Roger McGuinn (the
Byrds) and the like, while persuing a degree in Audio-Video Production at
Southern Ohio College (now Brown Mackie). Despite no label and very little
promotional help, Holly found her music being shared on multiple MTV, MTV2, and
VH1 shows and multiple radio and local TV stations.
Taking the next
step in her music career, Holly moved to Nashville, raised the capital to start
her own record label (Girl on a Mission Music, LLC) and put out a Christmas EP
called “The Songs of Christmas,” a full-length album called “Heartache to
Hope,” a Gospel EP called “Audience of One” and a single of the John Denver
song, “Country Roads.”
Girl On a
Mission Music (Holly’s label) represents what she likes to call Music that
Makes a Difference. Spears likes to use her platform to share a positive
message and her merchandise sales to help support a girl rescue from sex
trafficking through Destiny Rescue and a Compassion International Child. Holly
also likes to build into younger musicians both musically and spiritually, so
she offers weekly music lessons from her home studio for beginner piano,
guitar, and vocals.
She and her, now
husband Doug Simpson, reside in Union, KY area along with their two puppy
children, Nash and Hydro, and horse, Pretty Girl. (Bio)
On Jan 20, 2015
the Singer-songwriter announced the follow-up to her 2014 Christian set with the
release of her first country EP, BOOTS
AND BLING which was made digitally available via MP3 - UK iTunes - Amazon.com
The 8-song EP is
her attempt to get back to my roots and embrace her grown. "I grew up in a
little country town and dared to moved away from it at the young age of 18. I
moved five hours away from everything I had ever known in pursuit of a music
career. Back then, I couldn't wait to move to the city. Now, I can't wait to
live on more property and get more horses. I grew up as a tomboy, and when I
moved away, I became more ‘girly.' Today, I’m a good mix of the two.” she
shared
Spears wrote
five of the songs on “Boots and Bling,” many of which will be featured in the
upcoming film. On her new EP, Spears examines her life with songs like
“Brothers" and a song about her Grandpa called, “Sunshine.” Says Spears,
"My ‘Pap' was the glue that held our family together. I could definitely
see Jesus in him, as well as an ornery side, which made everyone love him!”
The EP also
includes cover versions of John Denver’s “Country Roads," Paula Cole’s
“Where Have All the Cowboys Gone” and the Dixie Chicks hit, “Wide Open Spaces”
- which Spears calls the theme song of her teen years.
Whilst promoting
her new album, Spears has been in Texas filming the upcoming faith-based film,
“Nail 32” described as “an exhilarating and emotional true-life story of an
ordinary man from north Texas who served an extraordinary purpose”. The film
depicts the grueling travels of the rodeo circuit, from the backbreaking bull
riding to the musical oasis of the honky-tonks. It portrays both the
picturesque culture of the American rancher while dispensing cowboy pride and
simplistic life solutions. Just as 32 nails attach the shoes to a horse, “Nail
32” clenches the importance of men being courageous, honorable, and truly God
fearing. (Source: Press Release)
