Antique Persuasion
“When Silver Threads are Gold” – “Really nice project, a brilliant album” -  Marie Crichton BBC Radio Shropshire

Tribute to The Original Carter Family
Antique Persuasion – is honoring the original trio of A.P., Sara, and Maybelle with this unique collection of Carter Family classics. Antique Persuasion, like The Carter Family, brings two female voices and one male voice together on a dozen of the Carters’ best songs. This tribute album includes “Bury Me Under The Weeping Willow,” which the Carters recorded at the original Bristol sessions and “You’re Gonna Be Sorry Cause You Let Me Down,” the last song ever recorded by The Carter Family.
Bluegrass fans will recognize familiar voices in Antique Persuasion: Brandon Rickman of the Lonesome River Band lends his talents on vocals, guitar, and mandolin; Jenee Fleenor, who can usually be found playing fiddle, mandolin, and guitar and singing background vocals for Blake Shelton & Larry Cordle, brings her talents to bear; and Austin, Texas-based artist Brennen Leigh rounds out the trio.
With the release of DON’T FORGET ME LITTLE DARLING, producer Jimmy Metts honors the timelessness of the original Carter recordings by gathering the talented Rickman, Fleenor, and Leigh around the mic to sing the old favorites using today’s best technology. The arrangements are similar to the original recordings, and the music rings true. Each member of Antique Persuasion sings lead on four songs.
Songs chosen include the first and last songs the Carters ever recorded, “Bury Me Under The Weeping Willow” and “You’re Gonna Be Sorry Cause You Let Me Down”, respectively, along with another ten songs they were known for performing...Read more Bluegrass Today

The Bros. Landreth
”Firecracker” -  “A lovely album... the music is terrific, such a range of styles, the vocals are lovely, the songs are catchy, it really is beautiful” - Marie Crichton BBC Radio Shropshire

Members: Joey Landreth - Guitar, Dave Landreth - Bass, Ryan "Rhino" Voth - Drums, Ariel Posen - Guitar
Genre: Americana, Alt-Country, Roots
Hometown: Winnipeg

Slide guitar, blood harmony, and heart-on-your sleeve songwriting. The Brothers Landreth specialize in love gone bad and cowboy lullabies.

Amazon.com Reviwew: Twenty seven years. Four bandmates. Two brothers. One album. Let It Lie, the debut release from Canadian roots rockers the Bros. Landreth, is proof that there s strength in numbers.
Anchored by the bluesy wail of electric guitars, the swell of B3 organ, and the harmonized swoon of two voices that were born to mesh.

At first listen, you might call it Americana. Dig deeper, though, and you ll hear the nuances that separate The Bros. Landreth whose members didn t grow up in the American south, but rather the isolated prairie city of Winnipeg, Manitoba from their folksy friends in the Lower 48.
The spirit of harmonious and melodious country rock burns brightly in Canada....Read More No Depression.com

It's a little hard to believe that the Bros. Landreth hail from Winnipeg, Manitoba, because of how well they carry the Southern rock mantle of the Allman Brothers on their debut album, 'Let It Lie.' Led by David and Joey Landreth, the foursome does an admirable job of copping a style and a sensibility foreign to their own environs..   Read more Folk Alley.com

The Malpass Brothers

“Learn To Love Me Too” – “Sound is stone cold country, a gem of a track, blew me away” - Marie Crichton BBC Radio Shropshire

Genre: Country  / Americana / Country Americana
Band Members: Chris Malpass and Taylor Malpass
Home Town: Goldsboro, NC
Record Label: Hag Records

“This is who we are…
My brother Taylor and I do the type of music we do because this music speaks to us, and speaks to the souls of its listeners. For us, traditional country music is the ‘real deal’ – every song portrays life’s joys, heartaches, problems and happiness. It comes from the heart, and has depth and truth. Nothing is sugar coated. Our goal, really, is to see this music be revived, to help ensure it doesn’t fade away. It is so encouraging to have young people come to our shows with a new interest in our ‘old music.’ Being able to introduce what we love to another generation feels like a great accomplishment for us. We want his music to be around for our children’s children…” — Christopher Malpass

The first time you meet the Malpass Brothers it doesn't take long before you realize they are as close to real traditional country music artists as you can get these days.

The Malpass Brothers were steeped in country music from an early age when their grandfather began teaching them how to play songs by Hank Williams, Sr., Merle Haggard, Porter Wagoner, Kitty Wells and Ernest Tubb on the guitar.
With traditional country music ingrained into them, it only seemed fitting that they would carry on that family tradition. Little did they know that one day it would lead to a steady gig of performing on stage with one of the country music legends their grandfather admired.

Chris and Taylor Malpass began opening for Merle Haggard in 2008, and continue to follow Haggard all across the U.S. and into Canada broadening their musical talents and comedic whit to audiences all across America and into parts of Canada.

The brothers continue to perform with their own band across the country when not on tour with the Hag. Influenced by the likes of Johnny Cash, Ernest Tubb, Elvis Presley, Faron Young, Waylon Jennings, Marty Robbins, the Louvin Brothers, the Wilburn Brothers and many other artists from that era, the brothers have been able to fine tune their performances into a unique, but current style of traditional country music and comedic banter.
They have also opened for Ray Price, Marty Stuart, Rhonda Vincent and Willie Nelson.
"Memory That Bad" was released in the spring of 2011. The album includes originals by the Malpass Brothers, Haggard, and Joss - along with a few covers of some of the brothers' favorite songs from the past.
They signed an exclusive recording contract with Crossroads’ Organic Records, with the new recording produced by Bluegrass legend, Hall of Fame member Doyle Lawson.  The self titled album was released May 26, 2015.  The label signing came in the same week as the NC brothers’ performance during the World of Bluegrass festival in Raleigh.
Christopher and Taylor tackle brotherly harmonies with covers of the Wilburn Brothers' "Which One Is To Blame" and the Louvin Brothers' "Satan and the Saint," as well as the original tale of unrequited love "I Found Someone to Love."
Christopher supplies the strongest lead vocals as on the Malpass' other original "Learn to Love Me Too," a ballad with touches of Merle Haggard and Gene Watson that deals with self doubt . Other highlights are the Jerry Lee Lewis rockabilly classic "It'll Be Me" delivered here by Christopher with a vocal that sounds more like Carl Perkins, and a pair of Hank Williams covers "Baby, We're Really In Love" and "I Just Don't Like This Kind Of Livin'" on which the vocals sound more like a young Hank Jr.

Marie Crichton’s BBC Radio Shropshire Country Show celebrates 10 YEARS

This Saturday,  23rd May 2015, BBC Radio Shropshire’s very own Country Show DJ Marie Crichton will celebrate 10 Years presenting her programme on the BBC!

Yes after some 520 programmes and over 13,500 radio spins Marie will reach a personal landmark  along the country road!
In September 2002 Marie started as a young trainee DJ with a Community Radio Station in Walsall.
When a vacancy became available, following the retirement of the previous host, in May 2005 Marie took over the Country Show on BBC Radio Shropshire (then broadcast on Mondays 19:00-21:00), which for her was a dream come true.

As a guide for her listeners she started logging her 2 hour playlists from 6th June 2005 with the tri-cast show broadcast being heard additionally on BBC Radio Stoke and BBC Hereford & Worcester. First spins were Maria McKee "I've Forgotten What It Was In You" and Blue Country's "That Summer Feeling" (Curb) rounding out the 2 hours with  Patty Loveless "On Your Way Home".
Popularity in her show quickly spread with her loyal listeners really supporting it, by voting, to bag her Favourite Radio Station & Presenter at the UK Country Radio Awards (sponsored by Southern Country Magazine and voted by listeners) on Sunday Feb 4, 2007 held at The Lakeside Club Frimley Green, Surrey (The home of World Darts). She repeated this snagging the award for the second year running celebrating on Sun Feb 3, 2008
>> Watch back from 6min 30secs

After avoiding the BBC Trust specialist music show cuts in January 2013 her show then switched to Saturdays 18:00 – 20:00 with BBC Radio Shropshire (The station listeners figures currently boosts 105,000 adults per week).

Marie keeps her audience up to date with all the country news and gigs (Read out between 18:30 – 18:40) as well as playing the best new tracks and albums and some old classics too. To ensure a diverse mix of artists and styles birthday features are included each week and sometimes a songwriter spotlight.
Marie prides herself on finding the more obscure but quality artists from around the world which embrace both Country, Bluegrass, Americana and singer-songwriters.  As the lone female BBC country presenter and one of the few across the UK  Marie is a strong advocate for supporting the “Women of Country”.

Are you a recording artist who has been played or interviewed on the show over the last 10 years?

Are you a record label or promoter who sent in music for consideration?

Are you a regular listener? If so which artists or songs has Marie introduced you too?

Canaan Smith

“Hole In A Bottle“ (Canaan Smith, Brett Beavers, Dan Couch) – I think this one is the most accessible, it’s called “Hole In The Bottle” -- Marie Crichton BBC Radio Shropshire

Genre: Country
Hometown: Williamsburg, Virginia
Born: Canaan Lee Smith on  August 24, 1982 (age 32)
Canaan Lee is singer-songwriter signed with Mercury Records (division of UMG Recordings, Inc). His debut single, "We Got Us" (#44 Hot Country Songs) was released January 24, 2012. His sophomore single, >> "Love You Like That"  (5 million+ views on YouTube) came out on July 21, 2014 which charted at #13 on Billboard Hot Country Songs and #12 on Country Airplay.
He was a reality television contestant on The Amazing Race, Smith and his girlfriend at the time, Mika Combs, were the sixth team to be eliminated in the 15th season.

In 2014 Smith became engaged to his long time girlfriend Christy Hardesty and Smith took the words of his romantic single "Love You Like That" to heart when he tied the knot with her over the Labor Day Weekend (Aug 30, 2014). The couple got married on the front steps of a venue called The Taylor Mansion in Columbus, OH. Smith said his new wife was “fun and can outdrink most of his guy friends. "She holds the parking lot record at Ohio State for shot gunning beer, so she's a trooper," added the proud groom.

Website Blurb: Smith is an intriguing blend of the everyday working man and rowdy thrill seeker with a poet’s heart and pirate’s ambition. A native of Williamsburg, Virginia, he grew up singing along to everything from George Strait to Rage Against the Machine. He relocated to Nashville during college and began to perform around Music City’s local bars. He landed a publishing deal with Disney Music and teamed with Brett Beavers (Dierks Bentley) to produce his Mercury Records debut.
In addition to writing for his album, Smith co-wrote Love and Theft’s top ten hit “Runaway” and co-wrote Jason Aldean’s “Black Tears” with FGL’s Tyler Hubbard as well as “Party Wasn’t Over” with Hubbard and Cole Swindell.
Canaan Smith is a songwriter of considerable depth and authenticity, and he possesses a voice that drives audiences to their feet dancing one minute and can have them crying in their beer the next. “I’m an everyday guy, but I want people to see the layers,” he said. “I’ve known my share of pain and I’ve got a lot to say.”

Smith released a self titled 5 track  EP (MCA Nashville) on March 24, 2015. He co-wrote all five tracks with Brett Beavers.
He will join Dierks Bentley’s Sounds of Summer 2015 tour with Kip Moore.
Canaan has a new album BRONCO set for release on June 23, 2015 - Amazon UK - Amazon.com
