New on The Show

Lindsay Ell
“By The Way”
Brand new single…If you’re getting ready to go out what better way than to listen to country show” -  Marie Crichton BBC Radio Shropshire

Factfile: Born  20 March 1989 (age 24) Calgary, Alberta, Canada
Occupations - Musician & Songwriter / Instruments – Guitar (purple Les Paul) / Years active 2003–present
Discovered and mentored as a teen by Randy Bachman (Bachman Turner Overdrive, the Guess Who)
Labels - Stoney Creek Records /

Debut single from Calgary, Alberta, native Lindsay Ell, "Trippin' On Us" (Stoney Creek Records) written by Lindsay Ell, David Fanning, Vicky McGehee (Lyric Vid) it was released: Nov 05, 2013 - US iTunes Lindsay debuted as the #1 Most Added Artist at country radio” when it earned 50 adds across both Country Aircheck / Mediabase and Billboard.

“Trippin’ On Us” was lauded as a Taste of Country “Critics Pick” and Lindsey herself was celebrated as one of the site’s “Artists To Watch in 2014” praising her as an artist that “protrudes confidence without the attitude” and as a “star in the making.”
Lindsay Ell opened for The Band Perry on their “We Are Pioneers” World Tour Autumn tour across Europe (London, Birmingham, Glasgow, Belfast, Dublin - Video Blog) Lindsay resumed on The Band Perry’s tour beginning January 9th, 2014 in Penticton, British Columbia.
Ell is readying her debut album for Stoney Creek. She released two sets independently: Alone (2009) and Consider This (2006).
On her website she wrote: I've seen all kinds of crowds ... and no crowd at all. I feel ready as a singer and a musician. I have confidence as a performer. I've been writing for years and, since moving to Nashville, have found how best to communicate who I am. I'm comfortable in a conference room with six people or onstage opening for Keith Urban in front of thousands. It's really not that different. Both are exciting and a little humbling. Either way, I'm ready to go."
She received nominations for Rising Star Award at both the The 2014 & 2015 Canadian Country Music Association (CCMA) Awards.
The 26-year old Alberta Canada "Shut Me Up" singer-songwriter rocked a glittery number by Alice + Olivia when she attended the 2015 CMT Music Awards (Weds June 10, 2015) at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee.

Country Music Televesion (CMT)'s "Next Women Of Country" artist Lindsay partnered to present, "Busking On Broadway," on Thursday, October 1, 2015 to promote her single, "By The Way." the free 24-hour concert took place in downtown Nashville outside of The Opry originals store on Broadway. She performed both original songs and covers, with visits from surprise artist guests and live videos posted to PERISCOPE.

The new single "By The Way" (Stoney Creek Records) released to radio Sept 28, 2015 (Impact date Oct 19) is getting lots of US Radio Attention. The gutsy, guitar goddess is back. Lindsay is bringing her modern Country take on the dating luck and life of a single girl in the world today. This is easily the best "getting ready to hit the town with your girlfriends" party anthem of the year. Ladies of every age will be blasting this one while they put their eyeliner on a little thicker and their lipstick a little brighter in preparation for showing "him" what she's made of. Who is this mystical "him," you ask? It just doesn't matter. It's every guy who has done us wrong, and all the ones who will do us wrong in the future.

Shane Owens
“Where I'm Coming” – “Randy Travis is a huge fan and when I play this single I’m sure he’ll get a few more fans….What a treasure, I think that’s absolutely fantastic, really wonderful -  Marie Crichton BBC Radio Shropshire

Shane Owens musical journey began in Samson, AL, at the tender age of five. That year his parents gave him a set of drums. By the time he was six, he was singing in the church choir. The youngest member of the choir garnered attention with his powerful voice, especially when he sang his favorites hymns, like “I’ll Fly Away”.

Owens was still quite young when his father, who was also a singer, and his mother separated. After the separation, Owens and his twin sister, lived with their mother who filled their home with the sounds of Nashville. Saturday nights around the Owens’ home centered on the broadcasts of the Grand Ole Opry.

Country was a way of life and country music was central to it all. Artists such as Don Williams, Keith Whitley and Ricky Skaggs could often be heard in their house, but it was George Jones, Randy Travis, Don Williams and George Strait who would later become most influential in Owens’ style.
In 2005 Owens was signed to a recording contract with Rust Records, where he released his first CD LET’S GET ON IT. The singer also claimed songwriting credit by writing 7 of the 13 songs himself.
Owens gained national exposure as an artist when his song, Bottom of the Fifth, found its way onto the country Charts.
Riding the success from his single, Owens set out touring the United States and Canada. As Owens prepared to release his second CD, Rust Records closed its doors, releasing all of their artists from their recording contracts.
From then until now, Owens has never stopped performing, often packing venues to full capacity. In March of 2014, Owens was finally able to release his second album, Homemade Mexico, to a crowd consisting of nearly 1000 of his closest friends, family and fans.
"Shane Owens brings it all: vocals, writing, performance, and passion. He has paid his dues, remained committed to traditional country and brings you a song with heart and a story. Songs that will get you through the tough times and enjoy the happy times, and lyrics that will remind you of the threads in life that make you the fabric you are today. He will bless you with his talent and his kindness. To Shane, I gladly pass the baton…"Randy Travis
"Where I’m Comin’ From," produced by James Stroud (Chris Young, Clint Black) is the lead single from Shane Owens’ upcoming full-length album, set for release in early 2016. Award-winning Ed Seay (Martine McBride, Collin Raye) also produced songs for the new project.
From Samson, Ala., Shane Owens has established an impressive following across the Southeast and opened shows for Keith Urban, Kenny Chesney, Hank Williams, Jr. and many others. His natural, traditional country style has repeatedly attracted Nashville label attention and led to two different record deals. Unfortunately, unexpected label closures left much of Owens’ music unreleased, testing his resolve and will to continue.
But through it all, Owens offers an upbeat perspective on his career.
"I’ve been blessed to be brought up the way I was brought up. And I’ve learned the hard way that you’ve got to be yourself. That’s what’s gonna sell: me being me. Maybe this whole thing is meant to be, and I’ve been through all of this for a reason, and the third time’s the charm."
His single “Where I’m Comin’ From” (AmeriMonte Records) was sent to radio October 9, 2015

Dave & Whitney
“Alibi” -  “What a great  voice she’s got,  I LOVE it, almost like a Heidi Newfield rasp to it, lovely voice, the more you listen to the  song the catchier it becomes” - Marie Crichton BBC Radio Shropshire

Country/Pop/Rock Chelsea, Southern Indiana natives Dave and Whitney grew up 23 miles from each other in Southern Indiana yet it took them 23 years to meet in Florida. Only 4 months later and they were engaged!  Engaged and planning the wedding, they took off on their first tour which took them to 32 states in 40 days.
They now call Nashville, Tennessee home and they said moving there "has made all the difference" for their career. They have shared the stage with some of country’s well known acts such as Randy Houser, Florida Georgia Line, David Nail, Parmalee, Sara Evans, Jana Kramer, Casey James, Dustin Lynch, Love and Theft, Frankie Ballard and one of their favorite bands, The Eli Young Band!
Dave and Whitney are "probably the cutest married couple in Nashville".
They recorded their first EP titled Alibi at Legends Studio with Producer Dan Frizsell. The EP consists of 4 songs and 2 bonus tracks, released July 11, 2015.
Released to country radio Oct 6, 2015, Country/ Pop “Alibi” (GrassRoots Promotion) with its "little help from my friends" tune offers up the perfect "Alibi" in a missing person mystery. A modern-day CSI musical, the track highlights eerie sounds reminiscent of the pedal steel featured in the TV series Trueblood. (Russ Pahl makes a special appearance to infuse the sinister vibe.)
The delightfully dark and stormy single showcases sassy female vocals and male harmonies that are "Oh so, Dave & Whitney." The cheeky hit-making lyrics and intriguing storyline parallel "Goodbye Earl" (Dixie Chicks), "Two Black Cadillacs" (Carrie Underwood) and "Gunpowder And Lead" (Miranda Lambert).

Ashley Campbell
Remembering” – “A real treat..what a beautiful song..I think it really will strike you, written and beautifully sung” -  Marie Crichton BBC Radio Shropshire

Genre: Country/Folk/Indie
Home Town: Phoenix, AZ   Location: Nashville/ Los Angeles
I'm a banjo pickin' girl :)

Big Machine Label Group proudly introduces the multi-talented Ashley Campbell and her debut Dot Records single, "Remembering" (written with Kai Welch). She joined Dot Records (a division of Big Machine Label Group) roster that includes Steven Tyler, Maddie & Tae, Drake White and 20-year-old newcomer Tucker Beathard and more.
The daughter of Country Music Hall of Fame member Glen Campbell and the goddaughter of Grammy award winning musician Carl Jackson, theres no denying her iconic Country pedigree. Her music is a mix of her wide-ranging influences, combining the old-school country sound popularized by her father during the ’60s and ’70s with contemporary Americana, rootsy folk, and country-pop.

Glen Campbell’s longtime fans may hear something familiar in Ashley’s melodies as she embraces these similarities while distinguishing herself as a talented front woman. The up-and-coming singer knows the industry well — she spent three years on the road with her father, playing guitar, banjo and keyboards and providing harmonies during his farewell tour.
I wanted to write something that expressed to my dad how much I wanted him to feel safe … that he didn’t have to worry; I’ll take care of him when he can’t take care of himself,” she explained. “When you’re little, your parents take care of you and make the world not such a scary place. As you get older, those relationships change and kind of swap places. The kids are the ones taking care of the parents and making sure the world’s not a scary place for them.”
“Remembering” is currently available for download via UK iTunes - Amazon UK - Amazon.com.
Campbell is currently working on her debut album with producer Buddy Cannon.
REMEMBERING – a poignant tribute to her father – Impacting Monday November 9th.
Ashley Campbell performs Remembering in honor of her father Glen Campbell at a JAA event June 4.

The Grahams
“The Spinner” - “I really like it, all sorts of styles in there….the vocal is really nice, it’s great..never far away from waving the banner of the road though they change the mood of their songs like the scenery flying by outside a southbound boxcar, they really are great….what lovely music they have produced” - Marie Crichton BBC Radio Shropshire

Members: Alyssa Graham, Doug Graham
Genre: Americana Folk
Home Town: New York, NY
Sumptuous and flexible croon” – New York Times
Alyssa and Doug Graham, from Nashville have spent nearly their entire lives exploring music together. Friends since she was 7 and he was 9, they became a couple in their teens, then husband and wife. Somewhere along the way, they also became The Grahams, a dynamic Americana duo who’ve married their love of adventure with a desire to build on foundations laid by their musical predecessors.

The unique process that Americana group The Grahams employed in the writing of their debut album RIVERMAN'S DAUGHTER (released Sept 3, 2013)resonated so well with the Nashville based band that they undertook a similar technique in the creation of new material, which will come together on their sophomore release on May 19, 2105.
With RIVERMAN'S DAUGHTER The Grahams traveled the Mississippi-hugging Great River Road, winding up on a houseboat in the Louisiana swamp where their songs of the river came together. A similar process went into the writing of new material, except this time, instead of following the lazy river, The Grahams rode streamlined rails, jumping aboard almost all the Amtrak cars including the Adirondack Line, the Texas Eagle, and the Sunset Limited, crisscrossing the country as the America that informs their songs whizzed by.
Our methodology is to follow the paths and revisit the places that inspired our predecessors, not because we want to imitate them or faithfully reproduce their work, but because we are looking for the modern echo of older sounds, and hope to give shape to these enduring reverberations. Nothing can serve that methodology better than riding the rails."
With their sophomore album,  the explosive and aptly named GLORY BOUND, which was produced by Wes Sharon (John Fullbright, Parker Millsap) which was released on May 19, 2015, The Graham’s are expanding their roots-based sound to include more propulsive and dynamic songs, as influenced by the speed and energy of their recent cross-country train travels, where the songs came together.
They are touring the UK & Ireland in November 2015 (Dates http://www.thegrahamsmusic.net/tour.html) in support of their new album which was reviewed by UK magazine Country Music People (4 STARS; Sept 2015 issue by Michael Hinston):
It is really impressive..the songs are original..the album steams in on full power with the ebullicent

Country and Pop artist Billy Joe Royal, passed away Tuesday October 6, 2015 at his home in North Carolina.  He was 73.
Even as a kid, he knew music was central to his personality. Like many of his peers, he recognized that it could also be his source of income after he saw Elvis Presley—another guy who mixed, pop, country and R&B—on The Tommy Dorsey Show.  “When he made it so big,” Royal reflected, “all us Southern boys thought maybe we had a shot, too.”
Initially Royal found recognition as a star at the Bamboo Ranch during the 1950s and 1960s in Savannah.
Royal first gained notoriety in 1965 with “Down In The Boondocks,” a top 10 Pop hit (#9 Billboard Hot 100; UK: #38 on the Record Retailer chart).
Watch Mr. Billie Joe Royal perform “Down in the Boondocks” (Live) recorded in 1999 on Rock -n- Roll Graffiti.

The song helped Royal earn a spot on the Dick Clark Caravan Of Stars, a grueling package tour that bonded him to such fellow performers as Herman’s Hermits, Jackie DeShannon and Peter & Gordon, with a backing band that featured several future members of Chicago. Clark’s end-of-the-tour wrap party required that all the guests dress like another artist on the bill, and the results bonded a number of the performers.
Tom Jones, Mel Carter, Peter Asher and myself dressed up as The Shirelles,” Royal shared. “We showed up in chiffon dresses and threw some wigs on. It was really crazy. Somebody took a picture and I’ve still got it.”

Follow up hits included “I Knew You When” and “Cherry Hill Park,” (>> YouTube; Top 20, 1965; #15 Billboard Hot 100) the latter of which was his last Pop success in 1969. ‘I Knew You When’ was in theme and vocal delivery similar to Gene Pitney's hits. Royal’s subsequent records were not as successful, but he failed to appreciate the potential of ‘Rose Garden’, as it later became a hit for Lynn Anderson.
“Cherry Hill Park” along with "Hush" (1967; >> YouTube Audio), were written and produced by Joe South.
"Hush" was subsequently recorded by Britian hard rock band Deep Purple (>> YouTube Audio) for their 1968 debut album SHADES OF DEEP PURPLE. The track became the group's first hit single peaking at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 (dated 21–28 Sept, 1968) and #2 in Canada while going largely unnoticed in the UK.

Another South composition, "Yo-Yo," just missed the top 40 in Canada and charted poorly in the U.S. when Royal released it in 1967, but a later remake by The Osmonds was a much greater success.
Country fans probably remember Mr. Royal best from his late 1985 single, “Burned Like A Rocket” (>> YouTube audio; written by Gary Burr), which shot up the charts and had landed in the top 10 by January of 1986. But late in that month, the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded shortly after liftoff, killing the entire crew. Sensitivity over the title of the record forced radio to back off airplay, and the song quietly went away.
We thought we had a number one record. It was selling so well,” Royal recalled. “I remember that I was in (producer) Nelson Larkin’s office watching TV, and we saw the shuttle go down. For some reason, it didn’t dawn on me that it would affect my record, but radio dropped it like a hot potato.” But, it wasn’t the end of his country career. “By that time, it was in the top ten, so the song really led to a great period for me.”

"I'll Pin a Note on Your Pillow" (>> YouTube ; written by Carol W. Berzas Jr., Don Goodman and Nelson Larkin) released by Atlantic in October 17, 1987 as the first single from Billy Joe's album THE ROYAL TREATMENT reached #5 on Billboard's Hot Country Singles chart. The Royal Treatment LP (Amazon UK) was certified Gold.
Royal was back in 1989, covering the 1966 classic “Tell It Like It Is” (>> YouTube Audio writers George Davis and Lee Diamond) which reached #2 on the Country chart. His 1989 remake of the Aaron Neville hit "Tell It Like It Is" just missed the chart summit, landing at No.2 and that same year, he bagged a second #2 country single with "Till I Can't Take It Anymore." (>>YouTube Audio)

He was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in 1988.
He experienced a late and unexpected resurgence among millennials in the 2000s.
This significant, and what some consider second major period in his music popularity, was due to regular airplay on oldies stations.
In recent years, he toured with longtime friend and fellow crossover artist B.J. Thomas, releasing the 2007 LP GOING BY DAYDREAMS, on Thomas's Raindrops Records label… Read more: Rollingstone.com

Royal's most recent project, His First Gospel Album: Hard Rock to Roll, was released in Dec, 2009 (Gusto Records (2) - GT7-2125-2 | Amazon UK | Amazon.com)

Mr. Royal is survived by his ex-wife Michelle Royal, daughter Savannah Royal and setpsons Trey and Joey Riverbank.

Tributes
Singer BJ Thomas was among the first to share the news with fans. “My best friend Billy Joe Royal, died this morning,” he tweeted. “He was a sweet and talented man. Never a bad word. One of a kind.”

The men of Shenandoah also shared a kind word about Royal, saying their former tourmate was a “sweet guy.” Little information has been released about the 73-year-old’s death, but WSMV-TV in Nashville reported it happened in his North Carolina home. Singer Ronnie McDowell also confirmed the news. The two were touring partners who were set to return to the road in November.

New on The Show

Sam Lewis
“Texas” - best harmonica playing ever listen out for the bridge…. thought that was rather nice” -  Marie Crichton BBC Radio Shropshire

Genre: Country, Soul
Record Label: Brash Music
Nashville-based Country & Soul Artist
With his compelling songs, stirring melodies, and preternaturally soulful voice, Sam Lewis has quickly established himself as one of Nashville’s most talented new tunesmiths. Waiting On You – his sophomore album via Brash Music and follow-up to 2012’s self-titled debut – reverberates with earnest emotion and restless energy, rich with the intimate lyricism of folk, country’s raw integrity, and a lived-in muscularity born of Lewis’ captivating vocal timbre.

Songs like “3/4 Time” and the tender title track are intuitive and organic, the rollicking “Things Will Never Be The Same” groove-powered and irresistible. Produced by The Wood Brothers’ Oliver Wood (Tedeschi Trucks Band, Shemekia Copeland) and featuring a stellar supporting cast of Music City’s finest session musicians, Waiting On You reveals Sam Lewis to be an exceptionally gifted troubadour, forthright, genuine and completely his own.
The self-described “typical kid with a guitar, going from Nirvana to Bob Dylan,” Lewis spent much of his youth on the move, with Asheboro, North Carolina as much a hometown as any. In TN, Lewis joined a buddy in Knoxville, paying his bills with a paycheck from Walmart Vision Center. He spent his off time penning his first-ever batch of songs, playing them out in countless coffee shops. By 2008 Lewis believed he had grown enough as a performer and an artist to self-release One’s a Long Time, Two’s a Fly By, an acoustic collection showcasing his gritty baritone and developing songcraft. A year later he packed his guitar and songs and made the inevitable move to Nashville.

Nashville transplant and singer-songwriter Sam Lewis has shared bills with some of the city’s most respected names, from Marty Stuart to Chris Stapleton to Leon Russell. His forthcoming sophomore full-length Waiting On You, which follows his 2012 self-titled debut, reflects those experiences with an all-star cast in the studio and a sound that’s clearly been honed by experience. Featuring appearances by The McCrary Sisters, Kenny Vaughan, Darrell Scott and more, Waiting On You was recorded at Southern Ground Studios in just three days and produced by The Wood Brothers’ Oliver Wood.
There’s a tremendous amount of love and understanding in these recordings,” Lewis said. “My appreciation for the players and their talents on this album continue to overwhelm me. I couldn’t be more excited to officially set these songs free out into the universe.

“She Wants To Eat The Moon” – “I do particularly like her vocal, Erin Youngberg, it’s the title track and I think it’s rather good….unusual title but I think it’s great” -  Marie Crichton BBC Radio Shropshire

Colorado’s FY5 - Finnders & Youngberg proudly swim in the deep currents of American music—classic bluegrass, tried-and-true honky tonk, country swing and skillfully spun folk tales.
FY5, also known as Finnders and Youngberg, deliver bluegrass harmonies and honky-tonk drive with virtuosic picking and fiddling in these epic new American songs from the Rocky Mountains.

FY5, made up of five master musicians: Mike Finders (Guitar), Erin Youngberg (Bass), Aaron Youngberg (Banjo), Rich Zimmerman (Mandolin) & Ryan Drickey (Fiddle). They have a pioneering spirit when it comes to roots music. Combining the traditional Appalachian old-time and honky tonk strains of the East with a spirit of adventure of the West, Eat The Moon showcases a band with a newfound maturity and purpose.

Bluegrass harmonies meld with virtuosic picking and fiddling. Rooted in tradition, yet at the same time pointing to new creative directions, Eat The Moon is an excellent Americana album....Overall, EAT THE MOON, is a great roots album. It’s fresh and different. The musicianship on this record is absolutely superb! I preferred the tracks where Erin Youngberg had lead vocals, but Mark Finders’ vocals are nothing to scoff at, I merely enjoyed those songs more. If you’re looking for an enjoyable roots/bluegrass/Americana album, you definitely need to take a listen to this one! (For The Country Record -Review)
Elsewhere its calmer waters as the band breeze into the album. The sweet title song displays all that’s good here, deft guitar picking, rippling mandolin and plucky fiddling all ensconced in a warm and honeyed pedal steel weft. Reminiscent of the likes of The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band circa American Dream it marries a pop sensibility with a rootsy feel and is tailor-made for airplay (Folk Radio UK)
Eat the Moon was reviewed in the October 2015 issue of Country Music People and was awarded 4 STARS by Spencer Leigh

“My Pain Ain’t News” – “Back with new album, a staggering 32 tracks…this one’s my pick I just think it’s a brilliant song..I thought that was really greatMarie Crichton BBC Radio Shropshire

I'm a person who likes commercial Nashville country, but when I set out to write it, sometimes things get "interesting." Nashville country gets tangled up with NJ, NYC and Brooklyn sensibilities and neuroses, taking the music in strange new directions.
Hometown:  Born in NYC. Grew up in a small town in New Jersey right over the bridge. Both of her parents taught in Manhattan, and that’s where they went on weekends to make life more interesting.

Current Town: She lives in Nashville, Tennessee. Had tenure at a community college on Long Island; she taught there while living in Brooklyn and then in Manhattan.
She's a songwriter, as well as a playwright. She put out her first CD: called BROOKLYN COWGIRL. she shared "to show I get the joke, I’m an unlikely person to be doing country music".

2015, ten years later, she finally released the sequel, with pictures from the same photo shoot and all, called THE BROOKLYN COWGIRL RIDES AGAIN.
With a one-year sabbatical she wound up running away from home to Nashville, and not going back. She gave up tenure, she explained "This seemed like a dubious move during the Recession, when I was unemployed and underemployed. At the moment, I’m teaching at Vanderbilt full-time and I’m very happy. Nashville is a great town for songwriters – it can be more isolating for playwrights, however"…Read More
